General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB), the premiere builder of submarines for the U.S. Navy, employs shipyard trades, designers, engineers and related specialist disciplines that produce nuclear-powered submarines. To support their continued complex operations, GDEB called for the construction of a new four-story facility at their Groton campus.

Located adjacent to GDEB’s occupied Building 189, the new construction contains both open and closed (classified) areas, including training facilities, office space, a server room, drawing vaults and an ECC. The facility also supports additional functional groups including the primary communication room for Groton, NRRO/RPCO, NNPP and nuclear testing. The server rooms and ECC are supported by UPS and emergency generator systems.

Insulet Corporation, the leader in tubeless insulin pump technology (Omnipods), acquired a property in Acton, MA to serve as its sole U.S.-based manufacturing location. The new facility provides capacity for Insulet to manufacture up to 70% more Omnipods on a single line with up to 90% fewer personnel than its four locations based in China.

The existing 201,690 sq. ft., three-story building was converted to a high-end corporate and manufacturing campus featuring space for research and development, post-market research and quality control operations, a call center, an employee fitness center with locker rooms, a 7,492 sq. ft. cafeteria and commercial kitchen as well as open offices, conference rooms and executive suites. The 155,252 sq. ft. addition, provides clean room manufacturing and warehouse space, quarantine inspection and receiving areas, a gowning and wash unit, packaging rooms and a shipping/receiving area. Work was completed on a fast-track schedule and utilize Lean practices to attain a quick, collaborative start. During construction, the Consigli team pre-fabricated key project elements including the addition’s façade and M/E/P racks to accelerate the schedule and remove labor from the site. The second phase of the project includes the construction of a four-level, 600-space parking garage to accommodate the significant influx of Insulet employees to campus.

Orsted’s 60,000 sq. ft. renovation of the Research Way facility supports New York State’s offshore wind industry, providing essential resources for marine coordination, site management, and parts storage. Located on Long Island, this multi-purpose facility will serve as a hub for regional offshore wind operations, advancing clean energy infrastructure with a commitment to sustainability and targeting LEED certification.

The phased construction approach allowed for temporary building use while upgrading office, warehouse, conference and data center spaces. Key enhancements include new computer room air conditioning (CRAC) and rooftop air handling units (AHUs), a parallel 300 Amp electrical service, a 750KVA diesel generator for emergency power and nine EV charging stations. Additional work included energy-efficient LED lighting, VRF and gas-fired heating units, elevator modernization, HVAC upgrades, new plumbing, and reinforced slabs for warehouse racking. Site improvements also included full window replacement, selective roof upgrades, and a repaved, secured parking lot with updated access control.

MathWorks embarked on the creation of a new multi-building campus on its 31-acre site in Natick to support their growing employee population. Following the construction of a new, 190,000 sq. ft. 569-space parking garage, built to accommodate the three new campus buildings, MathWorks selected Consigli to continue our presence on-site and act as the construction manager for the new campus. The Lakeside Campus features collaborative office and meeting spaces; a fitness center; wellness and recreation space; a full-service kitchen and cafeteria; outdoor social spaces; a green roof; and a level-4 data center. The buildings boast high-end finishes and technology to support this innovative organization. Sustainable elements include a greywater harvesting system and photovoltaic panels.

The project also consisted of extensive utility upgrades and demolition of two of the three existing buildings, while the MathWorks’ data center and employees occupied the remaining building—LS1. This building was renovated to meet temporary needs for the duration of the project and was demolished upon completion. This complex process required multiple phases and system shutdowns, all while MathWorks’ non-negotiable redundant power systems were preserved.
